Getting Past Winter Blues

Most times when the weather changes and the days get shorter, people feel less energized and more lethargic. As I get older, I understand the phrase "we just settled in for a long winter's nap". It sometimes feels like winter will never end. But have no fear! Winter will end, eventually. Here are some tips to help beat the winter blues. One thing you can try is to make sure your schedule stays busy. I know during the holidays, for some, it feels like the list of things to do will never end. What happens after that time? Make sure you are scheduling and going out with friends or family to help avoid being a couch potato. Another tip would be to make sure lighting in your house is on and going strong. Occasionally, we all like to sit by the fire and have the lights dimmed, but make sure during "daylight" hours that lights are on and your home is bright. This can help trick your mind into thinking that there is more daylight than there actually is. There is also a special lamp that can mimic daylight and give you a boost of UVB light to help fight off depressed moods. Lastly this next tip goes with a shout out to a nurse practitioner I used to work with that always wanted everyone to take Vitamin D3. Now you always want to check with your healthcare provider before starting any medications, over the counter or not. This vitamin can also help stave off depressed moods. Good luck to all and hope these tips can help in some way!
